I must say it is one of the best books I've read in a long time

After reading Mara Power's new book, Shadows of Atlantis, I must say it is one of the best books I've read in a long time. As a huge J.R.R. Tolkien fan, Shadows of Atlantis develops a rich and complex history, background, character development, and world setting, analogous to the creation of Middle Earth. Combining aspects of real world history as described by Plato and Ignatius Donnelly, it is amazing, impressive, and obvious how much real-world research Mara has done into this marvelous account of ancient Atlantis.

One truly amazing aspect of the book is how well Mara ties in actual history with a very plausible and entertaining tale of suspense, romance, and novelty. Science, engineering, plot twists, character depth, and mythological history are all intertwined beautifully in the book for a seamless reader experience. Reminiscent in many ways of the worlds of Roger Zelazny (Chronicles of Amber), J.R.R. Tolkien (Lord of the Rings) and even J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series, Mara does a beautiful job of tying fact and fiction together in such a way as to convince the reader she has solved the mystery of Atlantis and the ancient world. It is abundantly clear how much effort went into this book, not only in historical research of Atlantis, but also very plausible technological (think Elon Musk) aspects of an ancient civilization destroyed and great knowledge once known, and then lost.

In between the lines, I was impressed by what, in my opinion, hinted at aspects from the famous prophecies of Edgar Cayce, and even theories of mystical and metaphysical beliefs often found in Eastern philosophy.

As the reader progresses through the book, Mara does an outstanding job of building the characters, introducing and creating a rich world from its beginnings to the present, and leaves the reader breathless in a lush adventure of lust, betrayal, suspense; along with an amazing cliff hanger at the end!

I look forward to her next book in this epic series!

It's like the "Mists of Avalon" go to Atlantis!

I remember when Mara Powers was writing the last chapter of the rough draft of "Shadows of Atlantis" - we busted out a bottle of champagne to celebrate, not knowing at the time what a huge hit this book would become to be. Years later I finally got to purchase the finished novel and I simply cannot put this story down. The characters are so rich and detailed I can feel them step off the pages. I love how she weaves in New Age mythology with the epic tale of Atlantis in a way that makes this ancient world feel tangible and realistic. I haven't felt this way about a book since I read "The Mists of Avalon"! Bravo, Mara Powers. I'm hooked and cannot wait for book two! ~ Scarlet Amor, author @ [...]

Strictly for Hobbyists

Strictly for hobbyists interested in the inane chatter of commercial aircraft. Not a book by or for professionals.

There is very little information in this book. 100 of the 130 pages are dedicated to ICAO/IATA codes for airports and aircraft that could be found with an internet search faster than looking them up in this book. It is more a pamphlet with a large, though useless, appendix attached. This self-edited "book" contains numerous technical errors, spelling errors and omissions, making impossible to decipher even the included example messages.

Though there are a couple of pages showing the structure of messages that are useful, at $12 per useful page I can not recommend it.

No offense to the author but the one star rating was merciful. This book is outdated and should not be offered as viable information for selling advertising. Referencing using the phone book and "yellow pages" in 2015; enough said about the book. If you're new to sales, I highly recommend books by David Sandler sold on this site.

Excellent book. I have been selling radio time as an Account Executive part time for about five years. The book had some great tips that I was overlooking and am now implementing with better selling success. Not a well written book

The new version of Christine Arnothy's book is not currently available in the United States, but is available to purchase on UK Amazon. It has been translated to English from French. I was sent a new copy.
The frist half of the book is well written and very good. Christine describes where whe was living during the seige of Budapest. She is living in the cellar of their apartment house with several other tenants. They are starving and scared of the Russians who threaten to invade at any moment. She is desdcrives her plight in great detail with wonderful imaging.
Her family escapes to the country and lives in their country home for 3 years. At this time she is 18. For some unknown reason they must leave in a hurry taking practically nothing with them.
As the book goes on, the story becomes bland. She constantly complains about her employment and her first husband. The story ends with her giving birth to their daughter. In the afterword, she only talks about her second husband and son. Also, in the afterword, it becomes very confusing as she describes more about the things she wrote about in the main part of the book, but they are completely different. I am not sure if something was lost in translation or if it is purposely written this way. This is more of a refugee story than a story of wartime survival. The story starts at the end of the war and 60% of the book is about after the war and how irritated she is with her husband and employment and how she longs to be a writer.
I would have rather had a bit more pre-war background on the family, why they had to leave Budapest, and what her parents ended up doing. She goes into no detail about how she and her first husband part ways or how she meets her 2nd husband. Not even in the dedication in the front of the book does she mention her daughter, only her son. Very odd indeed.

Help - I Am Too Young to Die

Bang! Bombs went off just feet from the cellar. Cold, dark, and destroyed, families huddled together in the basement of their bombed-out apartment building.
I Am Fifteen - And Don't Want To Die is an extraordinary autobiography by Christine Arnothy. Christine is fiftee, living in Budapest, Hungary duriny World War II. She's growing up,, living in the middle of a war-torn city. her family is struggling to help others and to stay alive themselves. Really the only place to get water is across the road. Christine is horrified of getting bombed, while getting the water they desperately need. Throughout the many days Christine, her family and other families spent in the cellar, their world overhead was, being ddestroyed by raging bombs. They could only come out at desperate times. Her family needs to get out of the middle of this war, but when will they go, and how will they get out? Most of all where will they go?
I liked this particular autobiography because it is about Christine's hard times in life. Some books I've read about difficulties in life didn't seem real to me, but because this is a true story I could really get into it. I felt sorry for her because compared to her life, my life is perfect. The way Christine wrote this book was very interesting, she wrote this book from old diaries she kept when she went through all of these struggles. I likes the description, it is another reason why I liked this book so much. she describes the scenes she sees with great enthusiam. Like the day when she finds a wounded enemy soilder, I felt as if I was sanding right next to her looking over him.
Christine is a quiet girl, who tends to keep to herself. She also needs her parents and friends to comfort her, expecially now, living in the cellar.
Her story was a heart pumping adventure. She learned mant lessons about life and death. She lived to tell about her experience, the horror of living in the middle of a war-torn city.

Hiding in Hungary during WW II

Christine Arnothy was fifteen when her family hid in the basement of their apartment building with the other tenants during the bombings. Mainly Christian, there was only one Jewish man hiding amongst them; this makes "I Am Fifteen--And I Don't Want to Die" different from a lot of the books that take place in World War II -ravaged Europe.
There is the numbness after seeing so many dead bodies; there is the horror when they finally receive flour; there is the lack of water and the trek to get it.
The book jumps around a bit; after they escape the city, there is a three year gap which is immediately followed by an escape to the frontier. The ending is very inconclusive, leaving the reader hanging.
This is a good book, because it gives a glimpse of a Christian teenager during the Second World War. Perhaps the most moving part of the book is Christine's time in the confessional, and the priest's touching response to her words.
However, the book lacks a lot of detail. I'd like to read a more fleshed-out version, because the story is incredible. This is a great reference book for a teenager writing about World War II; I may also lend it to a friend, whose father escaped Hungary much like Christine!

A Yi is a Chinese writer living in Beijing. He is the author of two collections of short stories and has published fiction in Granta and the Guardian. In 2010 he was shortlisted for the People’s Literature Top 20 Literary Giants of the Future.

excellent and perceptive work

The book's flap correctly points out some similarities with Kafka, Camus, and Dostoeyvsky; readers of these authors will be able to recognize the similarities. The translation does seem to be a bit awkward in places, but I cannot be sure of this, since I cannot read the book in the original language. The story is tight, and puzzling in parts. And the author creates many interesting metaphors. The story expresses a deeply and astutely perceived philosophy. The end explains what you did not understand earlier . . . "and when all that will be left is dancing dust."

Predicable, but still kept my interest to the end ...

Predicable, but still kept my interest to the end. Chapters moved rapidly with plenty of similes and for me there were too many. Made be believe that their justice system was what could be bought by the Yang. The final chapter analysis of the reason for committing his crime was hard to accept for he laid it all of society. Still I was OK with it.

The young protagonist kills his classmate. The murder has no apparent motive but when the story reaches its ending the reason for the killing becomes clear. The story begins with a crime and then a hunt by the police for the killer; the tension and suspense are not immense but sufficiently tight to captivate the reader. The end of the tale, which is the best part of the book, takes on a deep philosophical and sociological examination of life and death. The protagonist’s senseless and wanton killing of Kong Jie is intended to demonstrate the meaninglessness of life. He emphasises this point by the careless disregard for his own life. Kong Jie is dead, so what? He is going to be executed, so what? The ultimate point, is, what about the rest of us? What about life itself? In the context of the overall picture of the vast and timeless universe, what is life? What is life when even the most magnificent stars also burn themselves out? It is only a matter of time. That is also the same point Camus was making in his version of a similar theme in ‘The Stranger’.

This English translation conveys the story and meaning well but there are pockets in which the translator seemed to have taken the Chinese text literally rendering the translation a little awkward. For example, it is not clear whether the line 'She was probably out of battery or spending time with her friends' was spoken by the victim's mother or the killer. The phrase 'out of battery' might have been a reference to Kong Jie’s cell-phone but the sentence as produced is too colloquial (when the context does not suggest that it was a colloquial statement). At various other places, the use of the word 'they' is not clear who it was meant to refer to.

There is also a misspelling of 'my butt' as 'by butt'. "Ma paid her back a long [time] ago' had the word 'time' missing. These are faults of the editorial team rather than the author or translator and mar what would have been a perfectly enchanting book.
