Excellent Book For Native English Speakers To Learn Chinese

This is an excellent series with almost real live dialogs. The dialogs have a good sense of humor and tone, like Book 2 Chapter 17 B where 宋华.watches 林娜 try on 旗袍 (qipao, a classic Chinese dress) for two hours. The book comes with a CD and you can also watch the dialogs acted out on YouTube. I had to laugh at how well the foreigners spoke Chinese (better than most native speakers), I am very slow. The vocabulary is valuable and the exercises build on words you have had. Now with Pleco and Google Translate apps you can quickly find words you forgot in the book. I think this is one of the best Chinese study books for English speakers you can get. It does use simplified characters, and I suppose for some it might be more helpful if you could get the books in traditional characters (I find them a pain in the @ss). I have not used the workbooks, but man, I already spend a lot of time studying Chinese! We are just starting Book 4. Like anything else, you get out of it what you put in, but this resource will reward your had work.

In this book, however, Daniel Wakelin uncovers the almost unknown influences of humanism on English literature in the preceding hundred years. He considers the humanist influences on the reception of some of Chaucer's work and on the work of important authors such as Lydgate, Bokenham, Caxton, and Medwall, and in many anonymous or forgotten translations, political treatises, and documents from the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. At the heart of his study is a consideration of William Worcester, the fifteenth-century scholar.

Wakelin can trace the influence of humanism much earlier than was thought, because he examines evidence in manuscripts and early printed books of the English study and imitation of antiquity, in polemical marginalia on classical works, and in the ways in which people copied and shared classical works and translations. He also examines how various English works were shaped by such reading habits and, in turn, how those English works reshaped the reading habits of the wider community. Humanism thus, contrary to recent strictures against it, appears not as 'top-down' dissemination, but as a practical process of give-and-take between writers and readers. Humanism thus also prompts writers to imagine their potential readerships in ways which challenge them to re-imagine the political community and the intellectual freedom of the reader. Our views both of the fifteenth century and of humanist literature in English are transformed.

At eighteen, Emerson Rosberg was poised to become an

Review of "Zero Visibility" by Georgia Beers

The really wonderful thing about Lesbian Fiction is that it has really become pretty diverse in terms of genre.Yes, I think we still have a ways to go, but there are more options to choose from today than there were in, say, 2000. Heck, in the last 10 years alone, the Golden Crown Literary Society has gone from giving out awards in 3 categories to giving out awards in 13 categories. (And I have no doubt that we'll be adding categories in future years.) Like a good mystery/thriller? Not a problem. Enjoy sinking your teeth into a good vampire story? Yep, lots of those, too. How about ghost stories? Sweet, because there are some really good ones out there.

Seriously. If there's a genre you like, you'll probably be able to find it in Lesbian Fiction.

While I do love all of the choices (and I read from many, many different genres), when all is said and done, I still cannot resist a solid romance. You know...that girl-meets-girl story with its great characters and relationship obstacles, all culminating in a great "Happily Ever After" ending. If the universe commanded that I only be allowed to read romance novels for the rest of my life, I'd be okay with that. It's probably the perpetual single girl in me that enjoys reading about others finding their Happily Ever After. I like living vicariously through these fictional characters that, in some ways, are very much like me...and yet, not like me at all. In short, romance novels make me happy.

Zero Visibility (Brisk Press) is Georgia Beers' newest offering. It's a romance. Because that's what Beers does - she writes romances. She does so proudly. Thank goodness for readers, she does it well.

I always enjoy the characters that Beers creates in her novels. Beers offers us characters who make mistakes; they're characters who have issues. They're not perfect. They're fallible. I can relate to them. Emerson Rosberg and Cassie Prescott are two such characters. Both women are dealing with mistakes they've made in the past and they each have their own ways of dealing with those mistakes. For Cassie, it's a bit easier. Lake Henry is her home. She has her family and friends to help her through and be her support. Emerson doesn't have that safety net. No siblings. Her mother has just died. Her father is not there for her. She really doesn't have friends to speak of. She just has herself. Until Cassie enters her life. And that causes a whole new set of issues that Emerson doesn't feel equipped to handle. It's a wonderful balance and Beers does a nice job of laying things out and really delving into minds of these two characters. Beers gives them depth. She brings a realism to Emerson and Cassie that had me relating with each woman on different levels. It's very satisfying.

The supporting characters in Zero Visibility are more than just filler. Each one serves a particular purpose throughout the novel. Periodically, Beers showed us the perspective of some of these supporting characters. I'll admit that I was thrown by this the first time it happened. It took me out of the story for a minute. ("Whoa! Why did we just switch to that perspective?") But I settled down and kept reading. Half-way through the section, I wasn't wondering anymore. And the next time it happened, I wasn't pulled out of the story at all. It made sense and just added more layers to Emerson's and Cassie's characters. I love Beers' knack for giving each a very distinctive voice. With each new perspective, there were very subtle changes in language use and sentence structure. Whether this was Beers' plan or not, I don't know, but I sure thought it was effective.

Beers doesn't skimp on the details. She takes the time to really paint the picture for her readers. Never been to the Adirondacks? No worries. Beers has you covered. From the description of The Lakeshore Inn to the layout of Cassie's sporting good store to the walkways and trails of Lake Henry, Beers provided the details and visual cues I needed to picture everything clearly. Sometimes I actually felt like I was breathing the crisp mountain air. Her descriptions of characters are clear and, in some cases, recall iconic figures. You'll love her description of Arnold Cross.

One of the things I've always enjoyed about Beers' romances is the slow build. Even though I can "see" what the characters can't as their relationship forms, I don't have an urge to yell, "Oh, c'mon already!" Yes, I can see things happening. Yes, I want them to see what I see. But I don't want to rush it. Part of the joy is watching Emerson and Cassie figure it out. It's great when the supporting characters see what I see and start nudging Emerson and Cassie in different directions. It's like I'm sharing a secret with them. And, yet, I still don't want things to move too quickly. I still want the slow build. Sexual tension? Yes, please. Internal struggles over the way their feelings are changing? Most definitely. Hop into bed at the earliest opportunity. Put on the brakes, Buster! I've come to care too much about the characters to have them rush things for a tumble in the sheets. I want the Happily Ever After to be believable. I want it to be for good. Beers' talent for assuring a solid HEA is off the charts.

If you're looking for an edge-of-your-seat mystery, or a nail-biting adventure, or vampires and demons, I've got some suggestions for you that will not include Zero Visibility. Because if that's what you want, you won't get it from this novel. But if you're looking for a solid romance with great characters and a complex, fulfilling love story, then Zero Visibility should definitely be on your list.

Georgia Beers at her very best.

Having read all Georgia Beers’ novels I always get excited when a new release is imminent. You know without doubt you are going to meet well-developed characters and enjoy their growing friendship, affection and eventually love.

Cassie Prescott has always lived in Lake Henry. Set in the Adirondacks, the mountains of upstate New York, Cassie enjoys the changing of the seasons and couldn’t picture living anywhere more beautiful. Her friends and family surround her every day and she feels loved and part of the community.

Emerson Rosberg is returning to Lake Henry for her mother’s funeral. After a tragic skiing accident as a teenager Emerson ran as far away from Lake Henry and her family as she could get. L.A has been her home ever since. The last time she had visited her mother was 5 years ago and Emerson has had to deal with that guilty knowledge from the moment she had received news about her mother’s death.

Cassie and Emerson strike up an unexpected friendship, each having regrets and recovering from bad choices. The more time they spend together, the more each one begins to influence the other. The reader can’t help but be drawn to the characters. Each with their own weaknesses, fragility and foibles.

Ms Beers paints a picture with a beautiful backdrop, where the spectacular colours of Fall dance along the pages and the crisp clear air surrounds you. Add to that two women who’s character development is so magnificent that you can picture yourself having them both as a friends and you have a masterpiece in romance.

Some authors have a gift of writing strong, powerful and stunning characters that stay with us long after the final page is read, Ms Beers is one of those authors.

Great Romance

I loved Georgia Beers new novel Zero Visibility! I great story with lovable characters. Emerson was an olympic hopeful skier until a tragic accident ruined her chances for the gold. She leaves the small town she grew up in and everybody behind thinking herself a failure until her mother passes away and she forced to return. She meets Cassie when she returns and what follows is really a testament to the human spirit and a journey of soulmates. I highly recommend this romance for a light fun read that will leave you smiling.

He doesn't hold IT back, he lets IT go.

From the very first page, one sees Janik clearly has a talent for description and holds nothing back in "Godforsaken". In the first of his three-part series, he strings the reader along with detailed imagery, all the while laying a vivid foundation for which the forthcoming books will rest upon. Janik pulls from something dark within, drawing from his own personal experiences and education, dusting his tale with dry humor and sex, keeping the reader engaged (with a guilty smirk) with every page turn. I look forward to this young author’s future work—surely wherever he plans to take me will be a sticky, uncomfortable place, most likely reeking of burnt rubber and a drunken night gone awry. Nevertheless, I’ll follow him.

This book will suck you in!

From the first page I easily entered this Godforsaken world Tarryl has created. Not only did I feel interested in the main character and his story, but in the way he was described I also felt an equal amount of disgust and dislike for his personality. I didn't think I was going to be interested in following his story because of this. As the tale went from normal missing person investigation to twisted I found myself spending the whole afternoon reading the book instead of just taking an hour to start it. The direction the story went was not what I was expecting. I have a feeling the rest of the books will also keep me guessing. I can't wait to find out.

"Godforsaken" is a highly descriptive novel full of graphic imagery that engages you immediately and throws you into the desolate lives of the characters. A picture of disturbing truth is painted that makes you feel the hopelessness, lechery, and cynical disorder of the human psyche that we would often rather ignore in Life. It establishes an understanding of how corrupt and sullen a human soul can be... and that's all before being introduced to the sorcery that sets the stage for the forthcoming books... A well written first novel... if you have the backbone to read it. I eagerly await the next one.

About the Author
Brian Portnoy, Ph.D., CFA, is a veteran of the hedge fund and mutual fund industries. He is currently the Director of Investment Education at Virtus Investment Partners, a multi-asset platform of boutique investment managers who deliver a broad array of investment solutions. In that role, Brian leads the firm's educational initiatives for clients and financial advisors related to sound investing and effective decision-making. Over the previous 15 years, he held senior strategy, investment, and research roles at Chicago Equity Partners, Mesirow Financial, and Morningstar. Brian is a regular contributor at Forbes.com and Yahoo! Finance, speaks about investing and decision-making to audiences all over the world, and has lectured on the history and future of hedge funds at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission as part of their Leading Authors series. Brian pursued his research and teaching interests in political economy at the University of Chicago, where he earned his doctorate. He earned his B.A. from the University of Michigan. The behavioral economics of choosing a fund manager

Short review: If you're thinking about how your money is managed (and I can't imagine who isn't) read this. It combines front line experience on how to choose fund managers, with the latest thinking on the mistakes investors make when choosing and how to avoid these mistakes.

Long review: Behavioral economics is already transforming public policy, marketing and healthcare. I've been using behavioral economics professionally for many years, leveraging its insights to understand how people make decisions. Portnoy's new book raises the bar in how to use BE insights to guide decision making in the real world.

What's especially refreshing is that this is not some academic tome, but written from the perspective of someone who is experienced in actively choosing fund managers for elite hedge funds.

The core thesis of this book is that financial decision makers face overwhelming choices and whether you are choosing between hedge funds, ETFs or mutual funds, you're attempts to choose effectively are limited by biases that trap investors. The recent history of financial product innovation is an attempt to deal with this overwhelming choice.

Portnoy, in an accessible style, lays out the core tenets of behavioral economics, how financial markets have been evolving over the last twenty years, and the steps investors can take to protect themselves against their own biases.

In sum, highly recommend to anyone interested in how behavioral economics can be used, how to make investment decisions, or how our financial markets are evolving in a world of overwhelming choice.

I never found the simplicity

I was eager to dive into this given the strong subtitle, we all want "the power of simplicity in a world of overwhelming choice". I don't know any more about picking good fund managers now than before. I think the "Five P's" of People, Philosophy, Process, Performance and Price, remain superior to his offering of Trust, Risk, Skill and Fit.

Throughout he talks of skill being nearly impossible to persist, but the book is really a sales pitch for hedge funds.

He criticizes Simon Lack's book The Hedge Fund Mirage as "controversial" and the "analysis is almost completely wrong." Portnoy instead should have provided a detailed refutation of Lack's book rather than a fleeting dismissal.

A far stronger recent book for institutional managers and "managers of managers" is Jacques Lussier's Successful Investing is a Process.

Because money management matters to all of us...

We all choose people to manage our money. Whether it is your broker, your investment advisor, or your mutual fund managers in your 401(k), every one of us must make decisions about who to trust with our current cash and future financial security.

I have read any number of books that focus on how to pick stocks, how to manage a futures, how to turtle trade, how to manage portfolios, successful asset allocation and the like. There are, however, very few books I have found that focus on how to make the critical decision about who will manage your money.

But think about this: When was the last time you picked a stock? When was the last time you even reviewed the underlying holdings in your mutual funds? Now, when was the last time you selected mutual funds in your 401(k)?

I know which one I spend more time doing.

In truth, each of us spends time in Portnoy's position of "manager of managers," and his book offers us all clear, rational and, at times humorous advice about how to better select money managers. Portnoy offers practical tips on how to cut through the "noise" of finance and behavioral biases and separate the fund manager wheat from the chaff. As a former professional "fund picker," the information in this book really resonated with me.

In addition, Portnoy's writing style turned what could have been an extremely turgid read into a pleasurable experience. Mixing anecdotes with research, data and a little self-deprecation, I found the approach to the topic truly refreshing.

About the Author
Don Davis and his wife, Carolyn, founded Synergetic Audio Concepts in 1972, he later retired in 1995. Don is a Senior member of the IEEE, Fellow of the AES and has received the Heyser Award, Life Time Achievement Award from NSCA and from USITT, Recognition for participation in the Brussels World Fair 1958 from the U.S. Dept. of State, and for the U.S. Exhibition in Moscow in 1959.

This is THE BIBLE on sound system engineering. You'll find no better reference for sound system issues in an easy to understand book. This is not for the novice who knows nothing of sound or physics or math. It's for those that truely understand basic concepts and want to learn "how sound works".

Best Ever Sound System Design Reference Manual

Congratulations to Don Davis and Eugene Patronis, Jr. for writing the most informative book on sound system engineering ever. The book contains all of the elements of theory, design and practical installation. The book is an excellent reference for the sound system engineer.

Sound System Engineering, Third Edition is the most complete technical book on sound system engineering I have ever read. It is a concentrated capsule of knowledge that gives the theory as well as instructions of how to implement the theory. Don has recorded for us how to do the installation process. Dr. Patronis has given us the physics back of the theory and he added the mathematics so one can reporduce the results. There are places that Doc uses the "It is intuitively obvious..." leap of knowledge that some might have trouble working through but it can be done.
