The Case That Brought UFOs into the Mainstream
By Johns
September 1965. John Fuller, a columnist for the Saturday Review is faced with a deadline. He begins his usual slow, painful search through his desk drawer of news clippings in search of material. He comes across a clipping from the New York Times from August 3rd on the subject of UFOs in Oklahoma. To his surprise, the subject is not dismissed by the paper. He looks for a follow-up piece, but there is none. He decides to investigate a UFO case for his column, which he envisages being a kind of space-age ghost story. What follows is an investigation that he says took many weeks, sometimes involving 18 to 20 hour days. The result was an article published in Look magazine, as "Outer Space Ghost Story."
Following conversations with Richard Hall at NICAP he decides to investigate the reported incident at Exeter, New Hampshire where a teenager and two cops reportedly observed a massive UFO one night. He interviews those eyewitnesses and plenty of others who say they say strange things in the sky. It is a very thorough piece of investigative journalism. Fuller also describes an apparent he observed with a fellow journalist: a reddish-orange disc that looked like "a miniature sun on a foggy evening" that was being closely chased by a jet across the night sky.
The UFOs appear to have somewhat traumatised the local population. At one point Fuller is asked, "How would you feel if you had a daughter who wouldn't go out at night because of these things?" One of the cops who investigated the UFO report by the teenager describes the object when it happened to reappear during their investigation his thoughts at the time: "My God, I see the damn thing myself!"
The more Fuller investigates the more it becomes apparent to him that the UFOs were seen in the proximity of high tension power lines. One eyewitness reports observing a silvery pipelike object coming down from the base of the UFO to touch the power lines for about a minute. A common theme is panic by pet dogs of eyewitnesses. One dog "went crazy" running round in circles, another ordinarily friendly dog spent its time cowering in the cellar.
As Fuller's investigations proceed into November he gets caught up in the famous 1965 east coast blackout, although he says the Portsmouth-Exeter area was one of the few pockets of light in the entire north-east. He provides extensive accounts of UFOs seen in the skies shortly before the blackout began, and one account of how a private pilot observed a 100 feet red ball of brilliant intensity just over the power lines at Clay substation, near Syracuse just before the blackout began.
Fuller relates how he wasn't taken seriously by Air Force personnel in the course of his investigation. A Pentagon AF Public Information Officer, Matson Jacks, gives him this piece of advice: "If you want to believe in UFOs, have fun. Enjoy it. God bless you."
Fuller states that following his reporting of the case, other mainstream papers started taking UFOs more seriously in early 1966. Incident at Exeter remains a first class piece of investigative research.

Documented interview of UFO sightings in New Hampshire 1965
By Ace
This book covers the sightings that occurred in an around Exeter, New Hampshire in 1965. The reader follows the author through the area interviewing various personalities about their experiences with the sightings. At the end there was apparently something was going on but other than consistent description of the UFO's no other insight is offered. The author (Fuller) appears struck with an unproven correlation of sightings near power lines and infers an impact to the 1965 blackout in New England.
Recommendation: A serious UFOlogy student should have this one on their bookshelf as it documents an interesting incident in Saucer history.

A very good, well documented story.
By Don Cremin
Fascinating to read. Something is going on out there as evidenced by stories such as this one. The evidence is so brazen here and yet it's part of a national pattern to say "hohum" & continue to ignore.
