Excellent book for creating artistic lighting

I ordered this book because I have to advise on lighting a long hallway in a condominium. The book has many helpful photos and suggestions. Before reading this book I was looking for decorative fixtures as well as other more standard fixtures. The book is about aesthetic lighting, which is far more important than the aesthetics of the fixtures. Its examples have very lovely lighting, many of which are fairly standard recessed or soffit luminaires, which themselves are not decorative fixtures. It taught me to focus my attention on how to create artistic lighting.

very happy with the book

Purchased this for a lighting design class and all is good so far. the professor said they selected this book because it had the most color illustrations and photos of all the books they reviewed. It is also cheaper than other text options. This book is published in the UK, so some of the word spellings vary from american english, but nothing too confusing. I received the book from this seller quickly and it was less expensive than purchasing it from the university bnookstore.

About the Author
Yunus A. Cengel is Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Nevada, Reno. He received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Istanbul Technical University and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from North Carolina State University. His areas of interest are renewable energy, energy efficiency, energy policies, heat transfer enhancement, and engineering education. He served as the Director of the Industrial Assessment Center (IAC) at the University of Nevada, Reno, from 1996 to 2000. He has led teams of engineering students to numerous manufacturing facilities in Northern Nevada and California to perform industrial assessments, and has prepared energy conservation, waste minimization, and productivity enhancement reports for them. He has also served as an advisor for various government organizations and corporations. Dr. Cengel is also the author or coauthor of the widely adopted textbooks Fundamentals of Thermal-Fluid Sciences, Heat and Mass Transfer: Fundamentals and Applications, and Introduction to Thermodynamics, all published by McGraw-Hill Education. Some of his textbooks have been translated into Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Spanish, Portuguese, Turkish, Italian, Greek, and French. Dr. Cengel is the recipient of several outstanding teacher awards, and he has received the ASEE Meriam/Wiley Distinguished Author Award for excellence in authorship in 1992 and again in 2000. Dr. Cengel is a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Nevada, and is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE). William J. Palm III a Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics at the University of Rhode Island, he helped develop an educational program of introduction to engineering based on MATLAB. He is the author of several books, including the System dynamics, published by McGraw-Hill and Modeling, Analysis, and Control of Dynamic Systems and Mechanical Vibration, both published by John Wiley.

Open your heart to Open House

Elizabeth Berg has done it again---told the story of Everywoman, or at the least, a story every woman can identify with. This moving book, about the disintegration of a marriage and its aftermath, will touch all who read it.
Sam deals with the end of her marriage in a scattershot way: looking for reasons, spending lots of money, trying to figure out what to do, and generally flailing about, emotionally. But the reader comes to understand why, thanks to Berg's wonderful writing. This was the reaction of a woman has no idea what will happen next, when all the things she has thought would come to pass suddenly are no longer a part of her future.
The reader observes Sam as she takes in boarders to help pay the mortgage, has a succession of temp jobs, and begins dating again. At the same time, Sam is going through the grief process, trying to heal herself emotionally in order to get herself to a better place.
I found Berg's humor much more apparent in this book than in any of her others. I laughed out loud when Sam sat down at her sewing machine and sewed up the fly on every one of her husband's boxer shorts! Her characterizations -- of her son, her mother, and the boarders -- were excellent.
Had I not read any other Berg books, I probably would have given this a "5" but I don't think it was quite as good, nor as moving, as "Talk Before Sleep" or "Pull of the Moon".

A Quick, Light Read, But No Masterpiece

I enjoyed 'Open House', don't get me wrong. I have read several of Elizabeth Berg's works, and am used to her simple style. It's quite easy to sit down with one of her books and finish it in a few hours. In other words, it keeps you engrossed, but doesn't ask much more from you.
Berg's strong point is making you care for her characters, as much as she can from how little she gives you. Sam seems to be a bit needy, pathetic and lost at the beginning, but soon learns and finds strength and resilience where she least expects it. She has her son, growing older and away from her; her best friend, so close at heart but so far away; her new friend, King, who we all have to adore; her new housemates, who open her up to the world. Reading through their lives for a short time is interesting and enjoyable.
That said, I don't see why this was picked as an Oprah Book Club selection. I'm glad to see Elizabeth Berg getting more attention, since her past works certainly deserve it. But this novel is sparse and light; it is not one of her best. It is worth a read, but not the accolades. While I sped through it quickly and couldn't put it down for a few hours, once it was through it didn't linger much in my mind. Read this, and then go read more of her older novels. Many of them are much better.

I loved reading this book just as I have loved reading all of Berg's other books (I was especially moved by Talk Before Sleep). Berg creates characters who are loveable and real, but in Open House, I was disappointed by the lack of depth she allowed her heroine and her compatriots. That aside, there are genuinely poignant moments in the novel that capture your heart as well as moments that are so amusing you'll laugh out loud. I was especially appreciative of Berg's easy, straight-forward writing style - I read Open House start to finish in one evening over a cafe latte. In a complex world, it's a complete delight to have the opportunity to drop into someone else's world for an evening and then leave it feeling satiated. I would highly recommend Open House as a "feel good" read.
PS. I'll never think of Martha Stewart in the same way ever again! Thank you Elizabeth Berg.

Cultural criticism at its global/local wry perverse best...

Meaghan Morris, early and late, writes cultural criticism at its global/local,wry perverse best. Lest this sound too late-capitalist cynical or rude, I should say that she writes from and as the local and national site of Australia, making this political and libidinal space of transnational cultural studies resonate with the most urgent, critical, and international issues that trouble our politics and poetics.
As such, she reinvents Asia/Pacific as she writes, showing us (or should I say the writerly obsessive "me") how to work and affiliate in a space of writing and moral-political concern. When I read her essays, I face the panic white sublimity of awe and admiration, clotted and displaced. She invents topics and tropes for each essay or book, reframing tourism, mass media, film, movement, embodied location, identity, without falling into the "banality of cultural studies" or the throwaway language and motel spaces that haunt our politics.
She is an untimely critic, whose writing is both too soon and too late for the market. But the "tyranny of space" in the Pacific has been overcome, and I for one am very grateful such an artist and cultural critic and scholar exists all packed into one person, Meaghan Morris.

good intentions, but I'm disappointed

I was soooo excited when I saw this book in a bookstore one day. However, this is not a book by leading progressive activists on how to be a progressive brotha. It's a very academic anthology. I am blessed to have the education to understand it, but many others will not.

I didn't think the array of chapters was that strong. I love that it has chapters on fighting sexism. However, there is no stand-out chapter on fighting homophobia, a most embarrassing scourge of our Black communities. Like a lot of men's studies text, I am pleased that this book has male and female contributors, however. You can even says it's "anti-essentialist" as a white men's studies guru contributes a chapter.

There's a chapter that bashes "The Cosby Show" and "Martin." Its critique is that you never saw Heathcliff or Claire at their jobs. A) That's not true. Many times you saw Heathcliff with pregnant patients and one time Claire defended Denise in court. B) The show challenged sexism. Even Michael Dyson wrote about this. There's a chapter on prison masculinities. It details the myriad roles that prisoners play, but what's progressive about that? Prison roles are the utmost opposite of that which is progressive.

This book is an example of my eyes being bigger than my stomach. I wanted to love it, but I just couldn't.
