Chen Lianshan is Associate Professor in the Department of Chinese Language and Literature at Peking University, where he also completed his doctoral studies. About the Author
Michael Riscica is a licensed Architect, living in the beautiful city of Portland, Oregon, with his yellow Labrador Retriever. After graduating from architecture school in 2007, he began taking the AREs in 2009 while the exam was in the middle of transitioning from ARE 3.1 to ARE 4.0. He quickly completed it and actually enjoyed studying for the CDS, PPP, SPD, and SD exams—due to the fact that much of the information helped him with his day job at a firm. During the recession and in the middle of unemployment, Michael failed the structures exam. This all forced him to take a short break from the ARE for a little while… Which before he knew it, turned out to be 1.5 years! At the end of 2012, Michael became really frustrated with not being a licensed architect. At this point, not having a license to practice architecture was holding him back from advancing his career and building his own business. He was also starting to run out of time with the 5-year rolling clock and the old 6-month wait after failed exams. Michael spent the entire year of 2013 very aggressively studying, obsessing over, and taking 4 AREs. He passed his last exam in October 2013 and was licensed in December 2013. While studying, Michael would frequently say: “With all the time, money, and energy I have put into passing these exams, I could have built a very successful business.” Immediately after becoming licensed, he transitioned all of his momentum into using his license, taking on more projects, and starting to share his experiences on his blog YoungArchitect.com.

Great read for anyone considering becoming a licensed architect in the USA and Canada

I am an architect with foreign degree who met all the requirements and was cleared to take exams in 2008. I passed one, failed a second one, got laid off in August 2008 and haven't touched books since. One exam I passed expired last year and I will have to do it all over again, if I decided license is what I want to pursue.

I bought Michael's eBook and read it in one go. Great points and suggestions. Michael shares his experience and his opinion of the process of preparing for exams and gives some very useful directions. Most important one is - you HAVE to study and prepare yourself. This book is the only reason I got motivated and started passing the exams. I tried to take one of the exams 10 years ago and failed and gave up. I thought I was just wasn't the type of person that could pass these exams. After reading this book I realized you don't have to be a genius to pass these exams, you just have to know how to study. This book will teach you how to study the right way and pass.

A Helping Hand

I have been following Mike blog for about a year now and found the information he shares to be very helpful. Shortly after he released the book, he started the ARE Boot Camp study group, which I signed up for immediately. Michael uses some of his blog posts as the main outline for the book, but expands in to more detail the process he went through to complete the exams. This book has been very helpful for me to prepare for the exams. It's the type of book you don't read just once. For me it is a resource for continuous support to complete the exams.

Clare Dowlings new novel

What I love about Clare's novels is how familiar the characters seem, and how she makes you really care about what happens to them. I also love the humour in her books. This novel is set in a small Irish town and follows the fortunes of Clara who moves back home there from London with her boyfriend, only to find that previously unfinished business with an ex threatens her happiness. As usual with a Clare Dowling novel the story is punctuated with hilarious side plots but the story also has a darker side. This was a great story and I would highly recommend it to readers.

Arguing that Flaubert was imagining his own epoch through the eyes of a visionary saint in the fourth century AD, Orr elucidates the dialogues between religion and science that are the dynamic of the work for the first time. She also insists on the meticulous accuracy and imaginative representations of the science of the work, proposing--in the "remapping" analogy of her subtitle--that Flaubert's Temptation is a paradigm of nineteenth-century French, and indeed European, "literary science."

For nineteenth-century French and Flaubert specialists, this book then challenges received critical wisdom on a number of fronts. Through his unlikely protagonist-visionary, Flaubert's "realism," "anti-clericalism" and "orientalism" are all given new airings in the religious and scientific evidence of the 1874 Temptation, as indeed in his "temptation" to write the life of his times.

Mary Orr is Professor of French and Director of Postgraduate Research in the School of Humanities at the University of Southampton. She is the author among others of Flaubert: Writing the Masculine (OUP, 2000) and Intertextuality: Debates and Contexts (Polity, 2003) as exemplifying her wide-ranging, interdisciplinary publications on Flaubert, gender, intertextuality and the modern French novel. Her most recent publications and current research are on the dissemination of nineteenth-century French science through intertextual and interpersonal relations.

I LOVE IT!

This book is absolutely amazing! It is highly individualized, open & honest, and everything that is essentially human. My heart was truly touched by the words within -- I have read it twice and I was every bit as moved the second time that I read it as the first. The book is comprised of a unique presentation of musings, poetry, essays, and letters intertwined in a way that left me breathless at times and ultimately with a sense of inspiration and a yearning for happiness in life. I cannot imagine how anyone can read this material and not be touched in some way. Without reservation, I highly recommend it. I believe all individuals (adult) who enjoy musings or thought provoking material will definitely enjoy this book.

This book is incredible! The author displays such vulnerability and brutal honesty with himself and his audience. To share something as personal as the poetry and his own letters to his muse is extraordinarily brave. Readers of this book will absolutely find inspiration and motivation within the author's core message of hope. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to readers like me who need things put in perspective every now and then.
