Aarons misfortune

the ghost of Mangrove Manor is a book about a young teen named Aaron, and his mysterious uncle that vanished along with his wife. Aaron & his family move to his uncle's old house because he gave it to them. Aaron finds the house very creepy and strange. At his new school he discovers some things about his uncle's backround, that may explain some strange things about himself and the creepy house. I would not reccomed that you waste your time reading this, really stupid book.

"One of the Greatest Poets of All Time"

The Italian philosopher, Fransesco Petracha (1304-74), who was responsible for the recovery of many Latin manuscripts, who was one of the primary causes of the revival of Latin letters, and who, like Dante, wrote much of his poetry in the vulgar tongue, is one of the greatest poets of all time and one of the most influential men in the history of the western world. Of the poems he wrote in his native Italian, 366 have survived under the name "Canzoniere" (short-song). Roughly 45 of the 366 poems are provided here in an excellent, faithful translation which steers clear of that cancerous and faulty element in poetry--the rhyme. They were carefully selected for their content, so the discouraging number of 45 poems seems bigger when the editor's subtle discretion is taken into account. The basis of these poems--like Dante's Beatrice and Catallus' Lesbia--rests mostly upon Petrach's undying love for Laura, but at times his verse resounds with political and religious themes, and with praises of Rome's past and the Italy of his own time. Every poem will be an enjoyable read; they are always profound and inspiring in their glorification of feminine beauty; and the vivid and picturesque allusions to nature are always soothing and edifying. One may easily see, after reading Petrach's "Canzoniere," Horace handing Petrach his pen and Virgil his laurel crown, for they were as real to him as the lines of his poetry. They guided him through the fields of Italy and lent him breaths of inspiration along the way. Petrarch was anything but a mean and vulgar poet; he deservedly stands out as great amongst the greatest. Also included are some short prose works (letters) which throw some significant light upon the life and character of Petrach. This conveniently sized collection of the poet laureate's works is thoroughly recommended.

The Start Of A New Kind Of Life.

The influence by Francesco Petrarca (1304-1374) on the poetry of Italy and the rest of western Europe was remarkable. But as important as his italian poems were his letters and essays. These writings discussed a way of life and thinking that formed the basis of Humanism (where - in short - the emphasis is on human accomplishments and not on God).

As a writer of letters (mainly his correspondence with friends and colleagues) he wrote in the style and used the accomplished tradition of classic writers such as Cicero and Seneca. But in-spite the influence of this tradition Petrarca's letters are very personal and authentic.
In a vivid way these letters describe the author and his surroundings. He writes about the many travels he made and his interest in Antiquity.

One of the most important documents by his hand is his description of him walking up the Mount Ventoux and the description of the thoughts he had during that long walk are one of the most important building stones of the Italian Renaissance, the start of a new kind of life.

A thoughtful selection in translation

Petrarch just isn't my favorite. That said, he is worth reading, savoring; his verse and prose are worth reflecting upon. This is a great writer and mind of an important time period in Western European history and culture that is often overlooked. Petrarch is a product of Feudal Italy and the Western Schism (the Avignon Popes) and his writings give a new dimension to the time period, particularly for anyone who already enjoys the history, music, painting, tapestries, sculptures and architecture of this era.

Italy and France are on the very verge of that explosion of cultural growth and development we now call the Renaissance. This is that very pregnant spot on the time line of Western European history when everything is about to change (within a hundred years or so)and Petrarch is an important voice and a significant person of the time.

The end notes and introduction are both very well done -- as one would expect of anything associated with Oxford's World Classics series. Both the introduction and the notes add significant contextual value to the author's works. This little selection of his works in translation is a volume very worthy of any Anglophone's bookcase.

The Next Level for any level

Dr. Ron illustrates a very easy to understand and yet profoundly complex system of acupuncture healing techniques in Quantum Acupunture, The Next Level. I enjoy this manual from a lay persons perspective because of the clear introduction of the foundational principles of the elements, chakras,organs and meridians. The color codes throughout the book are especially helpful for quick referencing and identifying the different systems and how they relate to one another. Having been personally treated for years with the use of the Electro Meridian Imaging and Dr. Ron's experienced hand at acupuncture I am confident to reccommend these principles and techniques to anyone interested in alternative healing and to established acupuncturists as well. Great book to keep on hand as a reference guide!

This book is beautifully written and illustrated. As a lay person who has some knowledge and interest in energy medicine, meridians, chinese elements and holistic practices in general, I found this book to be a very comprehensive reference book. It helped me to read it from the beginning. The charts and other illustrations are very easy to understand and I have learned some new information on how different aspects interconnect. Color coding everything is brilliant. Although, this book clearly is written for someone who is an experienced practitioner, as someone who receives treatments and benefits from treatments related to this, I found it very interesting. I think that Dr. Henry is bringing a very new perspectives to knowledge that is ancient. I am very interested in learning more about the 8 extraordinary vessels that is touched upon in this book. I highly recommend this book.

Ingenious book on astrophysics

From the start, this book makes clear that matter and energy aren’t always bound by Newton’s theory of gravity. It covers particle forces, quantum theory, and Hubble’s studies on electromagnetic waves in space. Then there’s the Doppler shift, the principal on how wavelength and frequency change depending on the direction of the source. Excellent diagrams are included as well, but some more case studies or examples of these theories and principals would be welcome. It goes into depth, thankfully, on the subject of dark matter and electromagnetic waves.

I would not recommend this book to anyone without a PHD in Mathematics.

I have tried to understand this book with no success except for some partial successes in the first two chapters.

The expressions that "The book does not require students to have extensive knowledge of mathematics, like calculus..."and that "all college students with an interest in science, especially astronomy, without extensive mathematical backgrounds should be able to use and learn from this book." are misleading.

first time ever I have to return a book : the typo's in the formula's make the book unreadable

the kindle version of this book has important typos in the formula's (at least chapter 1) : formulas of positions 244 and 251 of the kindle edition have been wrongly replaced by formula's from chapter 3 or 4. As the formula's are a very important part of this book, these typo's make the book impossible to read

Chris Zalewski is an occultist and author. She is a 7=4 Adept and co-chief of the Thoth Hermes Temple of the Hermetic Society of the Golden Dawn in New Zealand.

Pat Zalewski is an occultist and author. He contacted the last remnant of the original Temples founded by the Golden Dawn in New Zealand and he and Chris Zalewski founded the Thoth Hermes Temple in Wellington and became co-chiefs. He met and corresponded with Israel Regardie who travelled to New Zealand to meet him.

Last word on the Golden Dawn Tarot

Running to over 600 pages the first thing you notice is just how big this book is. I advise having a surface handy when you read it as it's not one for a commute!

It starts with a general introduction to the Golden Dawn theory of tarot though interesting this can mostly be found elsewhere. What was unique was the Zalewskis instructions on coloring the deck. Finally they make sense of the Golden Dawn color scales and how they an be applied to a card in a coherent fashion.

The meat of the book is in the individual card descriptions. These are each accompanied by an original image in black and white. I found the art work to be very pleasing and thankfully devoid of the rather cartoony style of some recent decks. I have copied some of the card images and colored them to the Zalewskis instructions with great effect.

The card descriptions not only give coherant divinatory meanings but more importantly relate each card to its place in the vast Golden Dawn system (including alchemically, qabalistically, the I-ching and many more). Essentially this book argues that the Tarot was the 'glue' holding together the diverse strands in the GD magical system.

If you are interested in tarot I would recommend this book, if you are also interested in the Golden Dawn I would say it is essential reading.

Pat Zalewski's Magical Tarot book is the ultimate guide to the GD Tarot. It contains numerous associations to the cards, a detailed description of each card on multiple levels, and various rituals involving the Tarot. It's an essential work for the GD practitioner.

my 9 year old loves it and

I'm "ghost-writing" this review for my 9 year old daughter:
"I LOVED this book and I think its really funny when Geronimo misses four good vacations (the beach, the mountains, an adventure, and Egypt) and when he got stuck in a half a cheese slice hotel! I read all the Geronimo Stilton books in my school and local library I can find and I have to say I can't choose a favorite because they are all so good!!"

The book is awesome it is so hot in this time of year so he wants to go on vacation but people keep calling him with problems so he misses 4 flights. So he ends up going to a hotel that's nasty and runs into his co-worker and they spend the day together .She reads him her magazine on things to do during summer. But over all its a great book and really interesting.

Never have I read a book quite like this one. This is not a book full of retelling of myths, but a book full of detailed info on the relevance of these gods to the ancient Greeks. Information on their worship, their origins prior to Olympian times, and many of the contradicting stories of their births, and how these stories relate to the times from which they came. If you love mythology, but are curious as to the more down to earth aspects of these gods, read this, and you will find yourself seeing the gods as more than just the vulgar fictions of a primitive society. Perhaps you will even begin to see them as they should be seen, as Gods.

Exceptional Mythology book!

This may be the most thorough and most readable book I've read on mythology, and I've read dozens. Currently, I'm using it as the primary source for the myth course I teach. It provides information about gods that most other basic myths neglect, often fascinating as well as significant. Get it now - it's been remaindered late in 2000 and will soon be out of print.

Wonderful Tales Of The Frontier

THE HANGING TREE is a wonderful collection of frontier tales by a woman who has gotten unfairly short shrift as a very fine American writer. Dorothy Johnson's stories, set mostly in her native Montana, dealt with men and women, frontier riff-raff, lawmen, and Indians. These are no stereotypical westerns, they are stories of the human condition that happen to take place on the frontier. The title story in this collection, THE HANGING TREE, is the best, I think. A haunting tale of an ill-fated frontier doctor -- Joe Frail -- it works as a pure western, as a moving love story, and as a psychological character study. This isn't the "bang-bang, shoot-em-up" West, but tales of life where the reality jumps off the pages. They are tales of quiet heroism and patient sympathy, in a language of wonderful imagination. People in these stories are just trying to live, love, and get through the day. I'm grateful to the friend who told me about Dorothy Johnson; her work reads just like yarns told around a campfire, and you can almost hear a grizzled old cowpoke's voice. If only an imaginative publisher would issue them in audio!
