Good coverage, but difficult to use for out-of-order reading or as a reference

I am using this textbook for a Masters-level course in network communications.

This book covers each topic quite well, but I found it difficult to use for out-of-order reading. Particularly when using algebraic notation, the meanings of the variables are not defined in each and every example, meaning that you have to manually go back through the book to find out where in the book the values were first defined. For this reason, where mathematical formulas are involved (which is quite often), it's difficult to locate a topic and read up just on that topic without a lot of frustration. It would be much easier to use if the variable definitions were repeated in each example.

So, perhaps it is good for a cover-to-cover read for someone who is able to take in and understand information thoroughly on the first pass, but it's not good as a reference book or for people who follow a different method of learning.

Mandatory Reading for Anyone studying Network Communications

Over 10 years ago, Dr. Leon-Garcia wrote the epitimal tome on computer networks, and it is still mandatory reading at the graduate level. The material within is starting to show its age. Most of it's very historical, what the modern comm systems are based on. If he ever writes a next edition, I hope he adds something about modern wifi.

This charming mystery is about a small-town duplicate bridge club with likeable personalities and a few expert players, several amusing and character-testing bridge hands, and a recent death – or was it murder? – lurking in the background. It includes half a dozen sidebars explaining how a bridge hand works out or doesn’t; also how they might add up to clues about the death of someone in the bridge club. Only 200 pages, well-paced and irresistible. Best for bridge aficionados or readers into problem solving; I can't picture a non-bridge player or the “I don’t want to think, I just want to be entertained” reader endplaying it all the way – it requires more finesse than that. Touché.

Funny, easy to read pick up and put down for laughs

Having read his biography, this was on the same par of madness and humour. But as it is all broken up form excerpts it is easy to put down, but also when you just want a quick laugh it is easy to pick up. Given the choice between the biography and this, I would choose his biography.

He's not an actual doctor, but who wouldn't want advice from him?

On the surface it seems rather silly that someone would ask advice to Ozzy Osbourne; an original member of Black Sabbath, successful solo artist and reality TV dad. Yet when you think about it, Ozzy being alive is a miracle from a medical (and human) point of view. The Madman is known for his substance and alcohol abuse. But he also survived a lot, emotionally and physically from the death of guitarist Randy Rhoads (whom he described as "God entering my life") to almost dying in a quad bike accident in 2003. Ozzy was approach by London paper The Sunday Times to write a column each week and answer questions as "Dr. Ozzy". It's an interesting concept and while it may have failed with any other rockstar, with Ozzy it works. Osbourne answers questions but mostly they aren't specifically about medical health, they're more varied and real-life issues. I read this book in an afternoon looking for a way to kill time while waiting since I had some time to spare. I must admit that I wasn't expecting too much out of "Trust Me, I'm Dr. Ozzy: Advice from Rock's Ultimate Survivor" but it was a much more pleasant read than I imagined it would be. I enjoyed Ozzy's first book "I Am Ozzy", which was more of a biography but still ended up enjoying this second book just as much. "Trust Me, I'm Dr. Ozzy". But not only is a collection of articles, there are some also added content as chapters in between in which Ozzy discusses a bit of his medical history and his genome which explains why he is still alive today.

His answers are often very funny but he's also honest; sometimes he says it's best the asker (s) go see a doctor. At times his answers make complete sense and he can relate to the asker's questions because he's been through a lot during his 62 years. Ozzy receives all kinds of questions and every single answer is funny if nothing else. Ozzy also discusses his genome which explains how he managed to survive all he went through. It's the more complicated part of the book with plenty of medical terms but the facts were interesting. I loved reading the questions and Ozzy's answers but another part I really liked was the quizzes. The questions are more or less divided into chapters related to different topics. At the end of the questions and the chapter, there is a quiz. Now those quizzes are related to medical health and some of the questions are far out and their answers even crazier. I learned a lot of crazy and unnecessary facts but they sure will make for interesting conversation. For instance a question is "What did Cleopatra put on her face as part of a beauty treatment?". I could never have guessed that the answer would have been alligator feces!

I read the book in one sitting in a few hours and even if it's a little on the brief side, it's a fun and entertaining read. I can't say that Ozzy gives the best advice (and in some cases he seems to make fun of the questions and those who make them up) but he's honest and you can't fault him for that. Besides you don't think he's a real doctor, do you? Some of his advice on the other hand looks rather well-thought and is sincere. The man's been through a lot and even if most people think he's just this crazy, old character, the Prince of Darkness is funny, charming and at times even displays some wisdom. If you're looking for Oz's bio you came to the wrong place, "I Am Ozzy" is what you want. If you read his biography and are looking for more, or perhaps just curious then "Trust Me, I'm Dr. Ozzy" is a very good and entertaining read. 4/5 stars.

Remen is one of a growing number of physicians exploring the spiritual dimension of the healing arts. "Coherent, elegant, mysterious, aesthetic," she writes. "When I first earned my degree in medicine I would not have described life in this way. But I was not on intimate terms with life then." Now Remen is awed by the vitality of the life force, which she witnesses through her work counseling cancer patients and their doctors at Commonweal, a cancer-help center in California, and through her keen eye for the depths of ordinary people. Remen tells of those who, having fallen ill, discovered previously untapped wells of fortitude and who, ironically, gained a peace of mind they had never known when well. She often turns common wisdom on its head. Discussing the meaning of suffering, she cites one woman who mourned the loss of her chest pains after corrective surgery. These pains had come whenever she had compromised her integrity; now her "inner advisor" was gone. Dr. Remen is a Blessing

Several friends had told me about Kitchen Table Wisdom over the years, and I just put off purchasing it. Then while recovering in the hospital from surgery, the chaplin suggested I read it. I read it during my recovery and have not stopped reading it since. There are so many lessons in the book, and Dr. Remen's selection of stories and writing style present an education on how to be human and to develop a deeper understanding of the humanity each one of us posseses. I look at my life, and those around me in a different way since I read the book. Dr. Remen has taught me that we all have the capacity to make our life a blessing and she is truly a blessing to all that read her words.

Wisdom Wrapped In A Story

If I was sitting across the table and complaining to Rachel Remen about something going on in my life, I am certain she would give me a pearl of wisdom wrapped in a story. Not only am I wiser for the reading of Kitchen Table Wisdom, I am more human.

This book contains approximately eighty extremely short stories from Remen’s counseling practice, primarily with cancer patients. Many passages left me with tears in my eyes. And though the stories were about her patients and coworkers aha moments, it was I who was illuminated. I cried over my negative attitudes and my courage.

Remen exposed me to myself by telling stories of her own experiences as a physician, and then as a counselor. She went to medical school at a time when there were not many women doctors. In order to be successful, she covered over her own tenderness with clinical expertise. Through turns of circumstances interspersed in the book, she uncovered much of the softness that her Jewish grandfather had instilled in her.

Her transparency about her own journey is refreshing, which in turn suggests to the reader that they, too, may have something to discover about their own life.

I was particularly moved by a story of a male patient in the final stages of cancer. What he loved more than anything about seeing his oncologist, he told Remen, were the conversations they would have at the end of his appointments. This doctor was the only person in his life who he felt completely understood what he was going through. Eventually his doctor said there was nothing more he could do; though additional chemotherapy might prolong his life. He did not want more chemotherapy, so the doctor released him from his care. He was devastated; yet he resumed treatments just to have those short conversations! The story continues. Remen is also the counselor of the man’s oncologist. This doctor came to Remen because he felt his life did not matter. He believed if he died no one would miss him!

In three pages, I have been given a beautiful story. Inside the story I see more clearly the value of listening to others with an open heart. And though Remen cannot tell the oncologist of the great impact he was making on one man’s life, she does tell me that even if I cannot see it, my life is significant to someone.

Kitchen Table Wisdom is a must read for everyone who desires to expand their humanness.

The foundamentals to understand the quality of lyric voices

It is impossible to find in the original language The History of Bel Canto. It is only available in some Conservatory Library.
This History is foundamental to clearly understand the evolution of the several technics of singing through the centuries. Rodolfo Celletti is probably the most reliable living "expert" of lyric voices. By reading his works you can distinguish a real, good operatic voice from trivial and bad voices.

About the Author

Paolo Croce graduated with a degree in civil engineering at the University of Napoli Federico II in 1979. He finished his master’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Colorado in 1982. He is a professor of geotechnical engineering at the University of Cassino and Southern Lazio, Italy. He is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the Italian Geotechnical Society (Associazione Geotecnica Italiana [AGI]), where he is a member of the AGI Committee for the Guidelines on Jet Grouting. He has 30 years of professional experience, and has authored several articles in geotechnical journals and conferences.

Alessandro Flora graduated with a degree in civil engineering at the University of Napoli Federico II in 1989. He finished his PhD in geotechnical engineering jointly from the University of Napoli Federico II and Roma La Sapienza in 1995. He is a professor of geotechnical engineering at the University of Napoli Federico II. He is the author of approximately 100 research articles published in main international journals, conference proceedings, and books. He is a member of the Italian Geotechnical Society (Associazione Geotecnica Italiana [AGI]), where he is a member of the AGI Committee for the Guidelines on Jet Grouting.

Giuseppe Modoni graduated with a degree in civil engineering at the University of Napoli Federico II in 1994. He finished his PhD in geotechnical engineering jointly from the University of Rome and the University of Napoli in 1999. He is a professor of geotechnical engineering at the University of Cassino and Southern Lazio (Italy). He is the author of research articles published in main international journals, conference proceedings, and books. He is a member of the Italian Geotechnical Society (Associazione Geotecnica Italiana [AGI]). He is also a member of the AGI Committee for the Guidelines on Jet Grouting.

Lack of technical data for JG application. Only wide ranges for drilling parameters that are searchable in the internet.
Anyhow, a good reference since there is no much books about the subject.
