About the Author
Laura J. Mitchell is Associate Professor, Vice-Chair and Director of Graduate Studies in the History Department at UC Irvine. She teaches African history, world history, and theory and method in undergraduate and graduate classes. Professor Mitchell works on making sense of early-modern societies in a digital age, and on making history accessible to diverse audiences. Her research on colonial Southern Africa has been supported by grants from Fulbright, the American Council of Learned Societies, and the National Endowment for the Humanities, the UC Office of the President, and the Mellon Foundation. She served on the World History Association Executive Council, currently serves on the AP World History Curriculum Assessment and Development Committee, and is President of the Forum on European Expansion and Global Interaction. Mitchell is the Editor-in-Chief of History Compass Exchanges. Her book, Belongings: Property, Family and Identity in Colonial South Africa (Columbia University Press, 2009) is available online.
Ross Dunn is Professor of History at San Diego State University, where he teaches African, Islamic, and world history. He is also Director of World History Projects at the National Center for History in the Schools. In 1982 he was elected the first president of the World History Association. Ross Dunn has co-authored many books on teaching world history including History on Trial: Culture Wars and the Teaching of the Past (1997) and The New World History: A Teachers Companion (2000). He is currently working on a text for world history with Elizabeth Cobbs Hoffman entitled, The Spinning Planet (2003).

Excellent "World View" text

My review is from a homeschooler's viewpoint using the Classical Approach. Will be using this text my 8th grader for spring semester along with the resources identified below as a "review" of middle school history studies.
After much research of products, I selected the text for following four reasons:
1) Enhances currently used resources and helps look at history: Needed more information than Alex Woolfe's "A Short History of the World" and connects historical events and trends across the world not dominated by Western viewpoint. Hyperhistory Online (see: http://www.hyperhistory.com/online_n2/History_n2/a.html) and Flow of History (see: http://www.flowofhistory.com/units/ )
2) Found "World History for All of Us" site which is wonderful resource and I like it's approach to developing an understanding of history through themes (See: http://worldhistoryforusall.sdsu.edu.) It is through the WHfAoU site that I found Panorama.
2) I wanted a WORLD view of history not dominated by the Western point of view
3) Along with "World History for All of Us", it provides a framework to look at global history events and how they tie together.
Some specific things I'm enchanted with in Panorama:
- the idea of looking at Africa, Europe and Asia as one continent...make so much sense to me.. it's the first chapter
- the text has the most wonderful maps throughout which provide a panoramic view of the era being looked at (hence the than Panorama)
- the Focus questions (highlighted in blue at the beginning of sections) are excellent in providing a basis from which to look at the events (also, are good test questions :)
