This book is the second of two volumes, the result of lengthy and meticulous study, on the air combat that took place on the southern flank of the Eastern Front following Operation Barbarossa. The period covered in these volumes saw the occupation of Bessarabia and southwest Ukraine and concluded when the areas regional capital, Odessa, was captured by the Germans on 16 October 1941. The book covers the campaign for Bessarabia in June and July 1941 and is an important addition to C. Bergström's books about the air war on the Eastern Front in that it covers the operations of some of the lesser known allies to the Germans in the form of the Rumanian, Hungarian and Slovak Air Forces in addition to the Luftwaffe and VVS. The campaign along the Black Sea coast wasn't the "walk in the park" as the initial months of Barbarossa often is pictured as. The VVS had been forewarned of the invasion and had managed to disperse their aircraft and thus wasn't as surprised as on other fronts. This also meant that they were able to strike back and offer a stronger resistance to the Axis' very mixed types of aircraft. Both Rumania and Hungary operated a "rich" variety of aircraft types and which must have been the quartermasters' nightmare. Rumania for instance used British, German, Polish and indigenous fighters in combat against the VVS! They also used French, German, Polish, British, Italian and indigenous bombers! The book is in a day-to-day account, which gives it a lasting value as a reference book to go back to in the future. The book is highly recommended and for anyone interested in either or both the air war on the Eastern Front and the minor air forces during the Second World War, it is a must! I have only one objection to the book and it is that it doesn't have any index, which is a pity since it has a rich wealth of names, which without an index is very difficult to search for. Being used to Osprey Military style publishings, technical literature and publications presenting a military or political standpoint, i was pleasantly surprised by the in depth level of a publication which tracks down every single aircraft operation. One could use this book as reference on statistical or other military publications on "Barbarossa" or components as subject. Being a layman on the subject of aviation in general, and ww2 aviation in particular, this book restarted my interest in aviation, which was awaken briefly by Constable&Toliver's "Horrido" a few years ago and maybe will push me towards aircraft modelling, something which i stood away from so far. Some parts were, for me, sometimes cumbersome to read, as i was not familiar with many of the abbreviations, so it took me a bit to adjust, as this is not the style of book one would sit down and read for entrtainment on a rainy afternoon. I also realized that a set of good maps of the region, especially Bessarabia, are a must. However, Encarta Worldatlas did do a good job in providing me with a measuremen tool for aircraft ranges. To sum it up, I want to congratulate Denes, Dimitry Karlenko and Jean-Louis Roba for the outstanding research work made available to us readers, for an often overlooked part of the war. It is a must-to-have work for any ww2 aviation enthusiast with an interest in the eastern front and especially for an ARR fan. Keep 'em comming gents! --By dead-cat

ground breaking history

Although not large in the number of pages, this book is ground-breaking in what it covers, and it covers it well. When the former Soviet archives started opening in the 1990s and into the 21st century, it finally became possible, albeit tedious, to look into details previously classified by the USSR on their WWII operational records. The author, with collaborators, has taken advantage of this and written a very readable, well-referenced narrative and dairy of the first 6 months of the 1941 airwar in the southern USSR as a part of the German Operation Barbarossa. There are good first person stories, claims and losses for the details and overall good history. This is to be followed by other volumes and we can only look forward to them.

Superb Two-Volume History of Early Russian Front Air Ops!

Even if this two-volume history of the air war on the southern flank of the Eastern Front from June to October 1941 wasn't bulging with rare photographs and superb color profiles, FROM BARBAROSSA TO ODESSA world deserve six stars for the incredible wealth of information it provides on its subject. Authors Bernad, Karlenko and Roba have brought together a mountain of data and produced what has to THE definitive history of Southeast Front air ops.
Air ops on the Southeast Front haven't received much historical coverage, especially the contributions to the Axis effort made by Hungary, Rumania and Slovakia. For that reason alone, air war buffs will enjoy this stellar Midland Publishing 2007/2008 release. FROM BARBAROSSA TO ODESSA utilizies previously unavailable material from a variety of Russian, German, American, Hungarian and Rumanian archives supplemented by various books and magazines unavailable in the West. That material allows the authors to create a wide-ranging chronicle that meshes information from both sides into a seamless, balanced whole.
And Bernad, Karlenko and Roba definitely manage to cram an amazing amount of material including first-person reminiscenes in the 288 pages that make up volumes one and two. It's all here: details on air combats, bombing strikes, ground attack missions, photo recce, etc. (Volume One, which covers the Air Battle for Bessarabia from 22 June-31 July 1941, runs to 96 pages. Volume Two, which deals with the Air Battle for Odessa from August to October 1941, tops off at 192 pages including a detailed index to both volumes). To be honest, my 60-year old eyes would have preferred a large font size but that's just me.
Over 220 b&w and color photographs of Bf 109s, I-153s, I-16s, He 111s, TB-3s, PZL P.11s, He 112, Ju 88s, Ju 87s, IAR 80s, Su-2s, Avia B-534s, He 70s, Po-2s, S.79s, Hurricanes, MiG-3s, Blenheims, Hs 126s and other types are featured along with shots of aircrew, ground combat, etc. Three color maps are also included along with a dozen, marvelous color profiles of Axis and Russian aircraft done by Tim Brown.
In short, FROM BARBAROSSA TO ODESSA is military aviation history at its finest. At $29.95 apiece, this two-volume history belongs on the shelves of all air war buffs especially those with an interest in Eastern Front ops. Highly recommended.

Exploration of a Little Known Part of the Airwar between Germany, Its Allies and the Soviet Union

This book is the first volume of a two volume set that provides a little known history of an important part of the conflict between Germany, its Axis allies, and the Soviet Union during WW II. Using sources from both sides of the conflict this work explores the relationships between the various Axis air forces and their Soviet opponents.The book examines their strengths, weaknesses, orders-of-battle and describes day-to-day missions in detail. The text is supplemented with a number of interesting, never-before published photographs of aircraft used by both sides of the conflict as well as a number of aircraft color profiles. Also explored are political circumstances that brought the various Eastern European nations to Germany's side during the war. The authors, Mssrs. Bernad, Karlenko and Roba are to be commended for their attention to details through examination of archival records describing the operations of the participants in this conflict which is of use to both the layman and historian.
