Have you ever thought about running away to Alaska and joining the Deadliest Catch boys? Are you a college student who needs a summer job and maybe an adventure? Or would you just like to find lucrative career that will push you well into the middle class? We can hook you up! This handy book features 249 densely packed pages on entering and succeeding in the Alaskan fishing industry. It starts out as an industry primer, laying out the different fisheries, seasons, challenges and equipment. It covers the differences between working as a fisherman and as a fish processor. There is only one way to avoid working as a processor and starting out as a deckhand, we’ll talk about it. Want to work on crab boat? Why? I’ll try to talk you out of it. The second part of the book consists of contact information for longliners, trawlers, salmon boats, processing ships, catcher-processors and land based processing plants. It contains contact information for literally thousands of boats and processing plants in Alaska. I’m pretty sure you’ll land a job before you run out of the provided contacts. This is not a lyrical book of fish stories, that isn’t its function. Oh, it has sea stories, but they’re there to make a point not just to add to the page count. Its purpose is to get you working. Fishing is probably harder than anything you’ve ever experienced, so we’ll talk about that too. If I can talk you out of something that isn’t right for you I’ve done my job as well as if I talked you onto a plane bound for Alaska. Returning fishermen are almost always successful while about a quarter of the first timers do not make it to the end of their first contract. I believe information is the key, knowing what to expect allows one to prepare for success. Everything you need to be successful is covered in this book. I’ve longlined, trawled, and crabbed. I’ve got a handle on the Alaskan fishing scene and I’ll help you find a berth if that is truly what you want to do.

useful knowledge

I ordered this book and after receiving it, couldnt put it down until the end. Its written in a useful language, not full of crap that doesnt matter to anyone outside of Harvard. In the back is the most comprehensive list of boats and companies I have ever seen. If you really want to try your hand commercial fishing, this book not only tells you how to go about it, but also lists so many companies and their contact info. Its worth the money just for the contact info. The author breaks down the industry by specific type of fishing and location and provides great info on each. I definitely recommend it.

No Fluff, Solid Advice, Experience & Even a Few Salty Tales. This Writer Knows his Topic.
By Bill Anderson
Length: 249 pages.
The writing in this is unbelievably solid, interesting and enthralling. I cannot remember the last time I read a piece of nonfiction that so captivated me as this. And trust me, I read and review a vast quantity of nonfiction.
Don't get me wrong, his writing style is not on the order of an Isaac Asimov or Carl Sagan. But, then, who is?
The writer is an experienced commercial fisherman and knows his topic, inside out. I kept thinking he must have spent fifty years at sea. Yet, when I learned from him how hard it is to get work in commercial fishing once you pass 27, I realized, he must be a bit younger.
At 63 now, I realize I have no hope of commercial fishing. Not even as a cook. But, thankfully, by reading books by those who do or have worked in what is regarded as the most dangerous job in America, according to Bureau of Labor statistics, I can live vicariously the life of a salty dog, but without experiencing the hazards related in the fisherman's worst day ever.
I loved how he related the difficulties and challenges faced by such employment, although, I would have appreciated his relating a typical day, blow-by-blow, in each of the fisheries discussed. Fortunately, for long-lining, Linda Greenlaw did a great depiction of this in her book, "The Hungry Ocean," and again for lobster fishing in her book, "The Lobster Chronicles."
Still, I couldn't help but bust out laughing when the author related several tales of himself or others who had committed offenses while at sea.
His relating of the Yakuza, as one example, was astonishing. Ear-witnessing a mutiny is certainly something to recollect. So, too, were his too brief glimpes of sea lions desperate to avoid becoming a meal for a pod of orcas.
I enjoyed this book so thoroughly that, even before writing this review, I got his second book, The Big Bucks Guide to Shipping Out as a Merchant Seaman.
One small inconsequential tidbit more: While working in Idaho on a US Navy submarine (prototype) I ran for state office. One of the towns was Driggs, Idaho, in lonely Teton County. I was the first, and I think, the only democrat ever to obtain a higher percentage of votes in Teton County than in Bonneville County. That was in 1984. I have this nagging suspicion that I met this author while campaigning that year.
Yeah, I know that last paragraph is meaningless to this review. I inserted it, partly, because his writing is so first person that it makes the reader feel as though he/she is sitting on a bench with him, listening to him jabber about his days at sea, not unlike Forrest Gump. What I'm getting at, this writer has a certain charisma, if such is possible in writing.
I wonder if this writer will try his hand at fiction. If so, I will be quick to get in line to buy his first attempt.
