Basic review of stock market

As a long time investor I was curious to review a book with " cartoons". I think if you are starting out with stocks this book has all the information in clear terminology that you need to understand the market. I didn't mind the cartoons, and I thought they might make a difficult subject more palatable. I have several girlfriends who don't want to think about investing, or managing their money for a variety of reasons. I think a book like this is less threatening and easier to read, IF you are that type of person, so it fills a purpose in my opinion.

Technical analysis explained well, fundamental analysis discussion could be improved

The author starts things off by explaining the main differences between buying and selling stocks for the purposes of investing (i.e., buying and holding) versus trading (i.e., making shorter-term transactions), what kind of things you need to understand about these two types of activities (including the risks you're taking), and what kind of tools and analyses you can use to make informed decisions. For readers with absolutely no experience playing the stock market, the author provides suggestions on how to get started risk-free by engaging in virtual or paper trading first using a few recommended websites, or to consider the pros and cons of getting exposure to the stock market by making mutual funds or exchange-traded funds (ETF) purchases.
The author then proceeds to explain what fundamentals and technical analyses are, and how they can help you make better stock picking, buying, and selling decisions.
Fundamentals analysis involves sizing up the financial and competitive health of a company based on measures derivable from several years worth of the company's (and ideally, as well as its rivals') balance sheets and income statements. Technical analysis involves recognizing important price movement patterns that may be signaling shorter-termed buying or selling opportunities. As the author explains, both types of analyses can help an investor or a trader make better decisions, but their limitations should also be considered.
I thought the book is very well written. The only thing I would suggest to make it even more valuable is to add more material to the fundamentals analysis section. My feeling is that while the several chapters on technical analyses were very interesting and informative, the single chapter on fundamentals analysis could benefit from a more extended discussion. For example, instead of covering just a handful of financial ratios, the chapter can include a few more additional ones that are quite useful to know as well.

Contains *Good* Information But Not For Absolute Beginners!

I wanted to get a better understanding of what my Roth IRA investments were doing and how certain stock were picked, and so I chose Michael C. Thomsett's book, GETTING STARTED IN STOCK INVESTING & TRADING (ILLUSTRATED EDITION), as one of my Vine picks.
This book is pretty straight forward and the illustrations help make certain points but it still leaves me confused about stocks and the whole financial world.
I have no background in finance what-so-ever, but I am familiar with certain terms like "selling short" and "buying on margin," and even after reading this book, I'm still confused about a lot of things when it comes to investing money. Luckily for me, I have a financial adviser/broker who makes these types of decisions for me because there's no way that I could actually be even remotely successful or even comfortable handling my own investments. When I get my monthly statement, I usually just look at the bottom line -- how much did my portfolio gain or lose -- and that's it. But there's so much more to it than just putting your money into a stock or mutual fund and then letting it sit there because based on other factors, according to Thomsett's book, not being proactive can make the difference between a loss and a gain.
For the uninitiated, I can liken this book to one that teaches you how to handicap (pick winners) horse racing. It will teach you how to read financial statements, describe different types of investors and traders and the difference between them, and contains strategies for picking companies and spotting trends, and how to set limits, but until you actually do or experience it, it won't really mean much.
Just like a book on horse-racing can teach how to place a bet, how to read a racing form and understand what all the numbers in it mean, and how the odds affect payout, until you actually start betting on horses you won't really understand what's going on at all. Another good analogy would be like reading a book on driving a car; you can explain and read a book about driving but until you get behind the wheel you won't understand there's so much more going on than just starting the engine, pressing on the accelerator, and turning the wheel.
This book made investing sound pretty much like a gambling, though with slightly better odds and more control over when to enter and exit the market and when to hold, but it didn't make me want to go and try my hand at it.
It's laid out in two parts, Investing and Trading, and explains the difference between both. A glossary is included in the back of the book and there are numerous web addresses to further your study on specific issues that pertain to the topic such as "ex dividend date" and includes one where you can do a mock investments with pretend money to see how you fair at the market, etc., and I do feel that I have learned many things that I wasn't aware of before (like why it's better to invest some of your money rather than letting it sit safely in CDs or savings accounts and why you should reinvest dividends rather than taking the payout), so I definitely did get something out of this book.
I do wish it had more examples, however, but then the book would be twice the size because the information is so dense, and the examples provided are adequate.
IMO, this book is a good tool to get some understanding of investing your money, but it won't be the only one you'll need to consult especially if you're a beginner with no knowledge of finance at all. It gave me a better appreciation of my broker (I guess he does earn his fees) and I would say to leave it to the pros, unless you have the time to actually spend learning about this stuff, because it's a lot more involved than just sticking your money in the market and letting it ride.
